Coparenting Commitments: A child-centered guide for raising children across two homes
Coparenting can be challenging, especially when parents disagree, trust has been broken, or communication is difficult. It’s helpful to remember that you do not have to be friends with your coparent, or agree on everything, to be a supportive and effective parent. While you cannot control your coparent’s choices, but you can take responsibility for your own actions and the environment you create for your child. Progress, rather than perfection, is the goal. These guidelines focus on behaviors that I can practice to put my child’s needs first.
Take a look at the guidelines below, and assess yourself on how well you are doing each one.
My Goal
To help my child feel safe, loved, supported, and free to develop healthy relationships with both parents, while recognizing that I am responsible for my own behavior, choices, and contributions to my child’s well-being.
My progress scale
For each commitment, I will select the response that best reflects my current behavior.
C — Consistently: I demonstrate this behavior regularly.
U — Usually: I demonstrate this behavior most of the time, with occasional difficulty.
W — Working on it: I recognize its importance but struggle to follow through consistently.
N — Needs attention: I need a specific plan to improve in this area.
My Commitments
1. Supporting My Child’s Relationships
I will encourage my child to love, respect, and develop healthy familial bonds with members of my coparent’s household and extended family. I will support my child’s relationship with my coparent without asking my child to choose sides, demonstrate loyalty, or manage my feelings. I will honor the timesharing schedule and approach necessary changes with reasonableness and flexibility.
Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
2. Sharing Parenting Responsibilities
I will fulfill my parenting responsibilities reliably, communicate directly with my coparent about matters requiring coordination, and make reasonable arrangements for my child’s care. I will use appropriate assistance from others when needed while remaining actively involved in my child’s life.
Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
3. Putting My Child’s Needs First
I will make parenting decisions with my child’s needs and well-being in mind rather than allowing my personal preferences, frustrations, or desire to influence my coparent to drive my actions or decisions. When emotions are strong, I will pause and consider how my words and actions may affect my child.
Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
4. Providing Stability and Continuity
I will provide a safe, stable, and nurturing home environment and support continuity in my child’s important relationships, routines, education, and community connections whenever reasonably possible. I will consider how significant changes may affect my child and take steps to support transitions.
Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
5. Planning for Practicality and Travel

6. Modeling Integrity and Respect
I will model honesty, responsibility, and respectful behavior in my interactions with my child, my coparent, and members of my coparent’s household and extended family. Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
7. Caring for My Own Well-Being
I will take reasonable steps to care for my physical and emotional well-being so I can parent effectively. Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
8. Supporting My Child’s School and Community Life

Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
9. Listening to My Child’s Voice

Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
13. Prioritizing Safety
I will prioritize my child’s physical and emotional safety in all parenting arrangements and interactions. I will not expose my child to violent, threatening, or intimidating interactions between adults, including situations in which violence is directed at my coparent, another household member, or another person. Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
14. Being Truthful and Responsible
I will provide accurate information to appropriate professionals and legal decision-makers about matters affecting my child. I will distinguish between what I know, what I believe, and what I fear, and I will address concerns through appropriate channels rather than exaggerating, withholding, or misrepresenting information to gain an advantage.
Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
15. Recognizing Each Parent’s Contributions
I will recognize the parenting responsibilities I have undertaken and respect the appropriate contributions my coparent makes to our child’s life. I will focus on my own responsibilities and my child’s needs rather than treating parenting as a competition or minimizing another person’s role.

Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
18. Protecting My Child From Parental Conflict

I will reassure my child that adult disagreements are not their fault or responsibility.
Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
19. Meeting My Child’s Developmental Needs
I will consider my child’s age, temperament, developmental stage, abilities, and individual needs when making parenting decisions. Progress: ☐ C ☐ U ☐ W ☐ N
My Personal Reflection and Action Plan
1. Which commitments am I already practicing reliably, to the point where they have become automatic?
2. Which commitment would make the biggest positive difference for my child if I improved it?
3. What is one specific behavioral improvement I will practice over the next two weeks?
4. What might make this change difficult for me, and how will I handle that challenge?
5. How might my child benefit if I follow through?
6. What progress have I made since I first completed this self-assessment?
My Commitment to My Child
I recognize that I cannot control my coparent’s choices, reactions, or behavior. I can control the choices I make, the way I communicate, and the environment I create for my child.
I do not have to be perfect. When I make mistakes, I can acknowledge them, repair harm when appropriate, and make a different choice next time.
My commitment is to keep learning, keep improving, and make decisions that support my child’s safety, stability, healthy relationships, and emotional well-being.
